Working with The Alan Turing Institute’s renowned Internship Network

Christopher Kettell, Chief Technologist at TRL Software, shares his insights on working with the Turing Internship Network

As the developer of the world’s leading traffic management solutions, we strive to work with the finest minds to ensure we are constantly challenging ourselves to stay best in class. In this pursuit of excellence, joining the Turing Internship Network (TIN) was a natural fit. Facilitated by The Alan Turing Institute – the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence (AI) – TIN provides an opportunity for talented doctoral students to apply their academic skills to real-world problems.

The doctoral interns will use their AI knowledge and experience with my development and product colleagues on TRL Software’s world-famous adaptive urban traffic signal control system TRL UTC, powered by SCOOT® 7 – a tool that controls traffic on signalised road networks across the globe.

The Alan Turing Institute has access to the most talented doctoral students in data science and AI, and the Turing Internship Network provides a great opportunity for our team to work with students who are eager to gain real-world industry experience that can be applied in a professional setting. Our product development benefits greatly from their outside-in perspective and academic expertise, allowing us to solve challenges including improvements to journey time, congestion management, carbon reduction and the continued development of advanced vehicle safety technologies.

This is the second year that TRL Software has hosted doctoral interns recruited via TIN. Speaking recently with Pauching Yap, who worked with us as a 2020 Turing Internship Network intern, he told me: “The Turing Internship Network provides an excellent opportunity to gain industrial exposure and to map academic research experiences to real-world challenges. I have a better understanding of the industrial challenges through this internship. It is a great experience to be able to solve real-world problems using my academic research skills.”

The 2022 interns began their work with TRL Software at the end of January and will continue for a period of four to eight months.
