TRANSYT 16 Course (Foundation)

NOTE: Courses currently alternate between on-line and in-person

Recently updated and extended to cover new features of TRANSYT 16, this course is for anyone involved in the design and operation of traffic management and control.  It is also suitable to anyone evaluating designs of individual or linked traffic signals and fully or partially signalled networks, such as those at signalised roundabouts.

The aim of this three-day course is to provide delegates with a grounding in how to use TRANSYT by explaining all of the core features of the program through a sensible mix of presentations, demonstrations and practical sessions.

The course is suitable for beginners, although familiarity with basic traffic engineering terms and ideas is assumed.  Experienced users can also benefit from the course, since they provide an opportunity to try out new features in the software.

Presentations will describe the TRANSYT method and how to apply it.  The relevant traffic principles, modelling of networks, input and output, and the many optional facilities are explained. The course uses the very latest release of TRANSYT 16 and explains the use of the graphical network diagram facility as well as the many other key features.

The third day will cover certain aspects of TRANSYT, including a key focus on some key enhancements introduced in TRANSYT 16, such as Simulation Mode.

NOTE: TRANSYT 15.5 courses and custom courses can still be arranged on request.

The course content includes a mix of presentations (from TRL staff), demonstrations and exercises including the following:

Day 1

  • General basics of urban traffic control
  • Relevant traffic principles, network modelling, offset and split optimisation
  • ‘Using TRANSYT’ overview
  • Explanation of all of TRANSYT’s core traffic models (non-simulation)
  • Cruise speed measurement and sensitivity
  • Network construction (from scratch) using Network Diagram
  • Data-entry screens, data grids
  • Speeding up network construction using library Files
  • Basic flow allocation
  • Multiple practical sessions

Day 2

  • Signal optimisation and associated optimisation influencers
  • Working with stages, stage sequences
  • Phase optimisation and minimum practical cycle times
  • Cycle time optimisation
  • Use of multiple different cycle times within a network
  • Interpretation of main output and results
  • Use of traffic flow overlays and other network diagram features
  • Interpretation of the most useful graph types
  • Priority junctions: pure give-ways (using ARCADY PICADY Priority Objects)
  • Priority junctions: signalled give-ways, opposed right-turn movements, indirect traffic control and mutual opposition situations
  • Signalled roundabout design using TRANSYT’s lane flow diagrams
  • Modelling signalised roundabouts
  • Pedestrian modelling
  • Multiple practical sessions

Day 3

  • Using advanced flow allocation options
  • Flow assignment
  • Modelling buses
  • Working with multiple analysis and demand sets
  • Simulation Mode: Background, scope and its use
  • Simulation: Further scenarios
  • Graphical interface: additional tools and features
  • Multiple practical sessions
  • Q and A session (e.g. Hints, tips and insight into future versions only we can provide)

In-person (aka face-to-face) courses include lunch and refreshments.

Please note that for in-person courses we request that attendees bring their own laptop. Please let us know if there are difficulties with that. Secondary monitors are provided by TRL at the venue to enhance the product experience.  Time-limited product licences will also be provided where needed.
