Introduction to Traffic Signals Course

The course is an introduction to the way traffic signals work and how they are designed. It is aimed at anyone who is new to the subject or related subjects (such as Transport Impact Assessments, or safety assessments).

Those who would benefit from taking this course includes:

  • Anyone involved in planning within local authorities where knowledge of how traffic signals work could help with maintenance and design;
  • Students studying or about to start their study in any subject related to road transport;
  • Traffic signal maintenance engineers who would benefit in knowing more in order to better maintain traffic signals;
  • Road traffic collision investigators needing to know more about how traffic signal control can influence safety.

It is an introduction and not intended to enable those taking the course to design signal controlled junctions in detail, but will allow more informed decisions in your day-to-day work and the identification of further useful training. The course should be regarded as a pre-requisite for anyone undertaking further training in TRANSYT, MOVA, SCOOT, any microsimulation, LinSig etc.

The course includes the following:

  • Introduction and definitions
  • Signal phases, stages and intergreens
  • Drawing conventions and symbols
  • Modes of signal control (ie, VA, SCOOT, MOVA, CLF etc) and signal timings
  • Introduction to modelling theory
  • Pedestrian treatments
  • Installation considerations
  • Safety
  • The future with big data and Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV)

This course is currently unscheduled, but is available upon request (Either online or in-person).
