Mapping Data for Road Safety

Online

Webinar and Q&A

Thursday 25th February, 12:30pm

With safety targets generating pressure for action, it is more critical than ever that data are used to understand where limited resources should be allocated. Ambitious targets, such as vision zero, require a coordinated approach. This webinar will consider the iRAP Star Rating system and a new route risk tool, developed by TRL, to assess how ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) technologies will affect collision risk on the roads.

The iRAP Star Rating system provides a proactive and Safe System aligned way to quantify how the road design features affect the safety of road users. Star Rating is also a key way to understand how proposed major upgrade and safety schemes will change risk and therefore influence performance indicator metrics and casualty numbers in future.

While targeted road infrastructure improvements is one way to improve safety, new vehicle technologies will also play a significant role. The impact of new vehicle technologies will not be equally distributed and will differ by route depending on which type of collisions are most frequent. In-car technologies are becoming more and more common in UK vehicle fleets but the safety impact of these is not always clear. As part of a government funded automated vehicle trial, TRL have developed a tool to map how collision risk is changing across UK roads.
