Street Auditing

It is widely accepted that accessibility is one of the ultimate aims of transport. Making communities accessible to all in an environmentally responsible way, regardless of ability, age or mode of travel is one of the greatest challenges facing transport professionals.

TRL has an expanding range of software dedicated to assessing and reporting on the streetscape with the ultimate aim of improving design and creating safer, accessible, sustainable and superior streets.

Three auditing techniques have been developed by TRL to assess the quality of street environments:

  • PERS – Pedestrian environments
  • CERS – Cycling environments
  • FERS – Freight environments

Individually or collectively, auditing these environments allow policy makers and stakeholders to highlight and understand any problems and set realistic priorities in each of these challenging environments.

To facilitate the storage, manipulation and display of information collected on site, TRL has developed streetaudit, a software package which enables the maximum value of the audits to be realised.

streetaudit – Pedestrian Module (PERS) is a new and dynamic software application to assess the quality of any pedestrian environment. PERS can assist in the identification of opportunities to improve pedestrian walking routes, whilst supporting the effective targeting of resources. Its systematic framework allows pedestrian provision to be assessed, reviewed and audited through the use of innovative and highly successful methods.

streetaudit – Cycling Module (CERS) is a new and dynamic software application to assess the quality of any cycling environment. CERS can assist in the identification of opportunities to improve cycling routes, whilst supporting the effective targeting of resources. Its systematic framework allows cycling provision to be assessed, reviewed and audited through the use of innovative and highly successful methods.

streetaudit – Freight Module (FERS) is a new and dynamic software application to assess the quality of any freight environment. FERS can assist in the identification of opportunities to improve freight routes, whilst supporting the effective targeting of resources. Its systematic framework allows freight provision to be assessed, reviewed and audited through the use of innovative and highly successful methods.

Easy to use functions

The streetaudit software includes:

  • Easy to use graphical user interface
  • Search functions for the fast identification of poorly scoring environmental features
  • Built-in GIS mapping capabilities
  • Graphing functions
  • Export functions to other GIS tools
  • Automated production of quick win recommendations
  • Storage of photographs collected on site
  • High quality metafile image exports for the preparation of reports
