Junction Analysis

Independent Junction Analysis and Assessment

TRL is renowned for its expertise in providing junction analysis throughout the world and has been instrumental in developing new standards in junction design and methodologies.

TRL has developed modelling tools for individual junctions, which are now industry standards. These software products are based on many years of research and development, with the input of world leading experts in junction design and analysis. Using these products in conjunction with their personal expertise, our consultants can predict with accuracy the likely traffic behaviour and accident rates at such junctions. The end results are optimum designs that maximise capacity, efficiency and safety.

Types of junction covered include roundabouts, mini-roundabouts, T-junctions, crossroads and staggered junctions, all of which may be signalised or priority-stream controlled, or a combination of the two. We can model junctions and intersections in any country, taking account of the local driving conventions, and can account for differences in behaviour at rural and urban sites. Perhaps of most value is the modelling of novel, unusual or composite junctions that do not easily fit into any of the conventional categories.

TRL also has laser scanning equipment that can be used to reconstruct junctions (usually for accident investigations) in 3D. Such models can subsequently be used to provide a ‘playback’ of the scene.

If you have a particular junction in mind which requires an independent and objective assessment, or you would like an informal chat about TRL’s expertise and how we many be able to help you, please contact [email protected], who will be pleased to provide you with more information.

As the developers of the industry standard traffic modelling tools for individual junctions and networks we are best placed to provide assessment and auditing of traffic models. We have been asked to audit some of our customer’s models and projects to help ensure accuracy and optimum utilisation of the products.
